Avengers: Assembled!

Remember The Avengers of old? How about The Avengers of right now? You know, The Avengers with Wolverine and Spider-Man on the team.

Blasphemy?

Depends on who you ask. Right now and in the future, some writer's Avengers team is always gonna be somebody's favorite Avengers team. There will be a character someone else believes shouldn't be an Avenger, that character will be someone's favorite Avenger.

The point is, there's no true Avengers team or Avenger... or is there?

Using the old criteria of The Avengers "seven-members-to-the-roster" rule, Second Printers, name your seven member Avengers roster. It doesn't have to be the mightiest or the newest or the darkest, just yours.

Keep it to Marvel characters and you know what? I'll even throw in Jarvis, free of charge.

Here's mine:

Captain America (Steve Rogers)
Thor
Iron Man
The Wasp
She-Hulk
Namor, The Sub-Mariner
Niko (if I had my way, formerly of The Runaways)

And some notes, from when I did this over at Trout In the Milk:

Hawkeye: (Field Leader) What was it Unca Cheeks said? You need a guy who lives and breathes the Avengers, the gung-ho "glue that keeps the team together" type. Plus we gotta get him back in his elegant "snort" purple costume.

The Wasp: (Chief Strategist/Publicist/Leader When Hawkeye isn't) I like the idea of reconciling the teen-age, flighty, Stan version and the ultra-competent Stern version. (With Hank, retired from the super-gig, acting as a foil for her. I’d like to see an honest and true portrayal of a divorced couple who’s jobs keep throwing them together.)

Make the two of ‘em co-leaders, and see sparks fly.

The Falcon: HUGE Personal favorite, and his past Avengers portrayals always bothered me. I see him as being, very subtly, the smartest dude in the room - And in most cases the only one who’s v aware of the inherent absurdity of the superhero gig. Potentially a very capable leader - My Falcon is the Kirby version, Cap's absolute equal - who doesn’t really want the job. Plus Redwing’s a cool visual.

The Hulk: Hanging out as much so the Avengers can keep an eye on him more than serving as a valued team-mate. The most physically powerful member of the team, also the most likely to flip out and kill everyone.

Daredevil: Marvel’s ultimate loner, makes Spider-man look like a social butterfly. DD's completely wrong for this gig - Heck, he can barely compromise his methods long enough to work with a partner.

But, remember, the name-of-the-game is dramatic tension...

So OF COURSE he should go on a team. I mean, duh.

Tigra: With Hawkeye constrained by the leader role, you need someone to say what everybody’s thinking but too polite to blurt out.

Plus she's just a good visual, and will look cool standing next to the Hulk or Daredevil.

Stingray: Our POV character, the part time hero moving up to the majors. He feels completely over his head 97% of the time.

Clea: Having a magic user around provides some solid story potential, and I like her much more’n, say, the Scarlet Witch. (Who I don't have a handle on at all, characterization-wise.) I’d play around with the fact that she’s not really FROM here, and her ways are not exactly our ways. She can kind of take over the Vision’s perspective.

Plus we’re playing around a lot with the idea of families, here. And there’s gotta be some interesting story-tension to Clea's maternal relationships. (She is Umar’s kid, right?)

D Man
3 D Man
Solomon Kane
Dr. Druid
Forge
Cloak & Dagger (counts as one)
Firestar

Written by J M DeMatteis and drawn by Rob Liefeld, the characters would all sit around, contemplate their mortality while recanting extraordinary fantasy childhood memories until they stood up and fell down, due the breaking of their (snicker) emaciated ankles.
(Almost got through that with a straight face...)

Captain America (Steve Rogers)

Iron Man

Ms.Marvel
Hawkeye

I'm sure I've just picked a late 70's/eraly 80's line up. I was torn between Thor and Hercules, Ms. Marvel and the Scarlett Witch, and gave up trying to squeeze in Wonder Man and the Beast.

Pretty easy:

Captain America (Steve)
Iron Man
Thor
Yellowjacket
Wonder Man
Ms. Marvel
Vision

I'm thinking there's a mass game of heroclix here where we all make our favorite list into a team and duke it out

@ Nate

Heroclix?

What are these Heroclix you speak of?

Captain America
Hawkeye
Iron Man
Thor
Wasp
She-Hulk
Black Panther

Captain America
Hercules
Iron Man
Giant Man
Wasp
Hawkeye
Scarlet Witch

This was more difficult than it should have been.

This was quite tricky, and I do feel a little guilty that I haven't got a patriotic choice in there like Union Jack or Captain Britain.

Captain America
Thor
Iron Man
Wasp
Ms. Marvel
Adam Warlock
The Prowler

I will defend my selection of The Prowler to the death.

Hawkeye
Ant-Man (Scott Lang)
Hellcat
Beast
Warbird
Thor/Nova (Richard Rider)*
Lionheart (well,s he was going by Captain Britain, but Braddock took that name back)

*I figure one of these two will always be otherwise occupied, with Thor smiting Frost Giants in Jountheim, or Nova off in space trying to get the Kree to settle down, so I'd just alternate them.

Tigra
Quasar (Wendell Vaughn)
